Fact 1.There have been many earthquakes in history. Most earthquakes occur in the Pacific ocean. Some occur in fault zones like the San Andreas fault. Here is a picture after a earthquake.

Fact 2.Whenever you feel the earth shaking that is plate tectonics. Plate tectonics are giant rock slabs that make up earths layers. The slabs push each other for a long time until one of them slides over the other one. Sometimes they push push into each other instead this can effect the environment in a huge way it can shake the earth or it can create a tsunami. A tsunami is a giant wave that sends surges of water. Sometimes it can go to 100 feet it is also started by an earthquake but it can also start by volcanic eruption.

Fact 3.Here is a picture of plate tectonics sliding under the other layer. In the picture the plate tectonics are moving so what happens is it pulls the water back and after it pulls it back it releases the water and a tsunami starts. After a tsunami hits it floods the city and lots of people try to run or climb into a high place if some people don't survive they end up being pulled back into the ocean.

Fact 4.If some people want to know when a earthquake will hit they use a device called a Richter scale. A Richter scale is a device used for measuring the amount of energy released by the earthquake. Some people also use the seismograph to measure energy released by the earthquake.

Here is a picture of the levels of how dangerous an earthquake can be using the Richter scale.

Fact 5.Lots of earthquakes happen at faults like the San Andreas fault or the Sendai fault in Japan. A Fault line is a thin zone of rock separating blocks of the Earths crust ;When rocks shift and fracture the ground.

Here are types of fault lines.

Fact 6.If you want to prepare for an earthquake here is what you should do.
1.Take cover. In each room of your home, identify the safest places to"drop, cover, and hold on".
2.If there is a room in your home with windows avoid it because if you hide in that room the glass could fall out and hit you and injure you.
3.Take important supplies with you like food, water, blanket, pets(if you have pets),and get your family out of there.
4.If your in a house that has lots of stories leave and find another house that's one story because if you are under a house with lots of stories and the earthquake is shaking the house could fall on you.

Fact 7. How it becomes a earthquake is when the plate tectonics move and they cause the Earth to shake. When the tectonic plates move over each other or crash they cause an earthquake. This can cause a fault line. When an earthquake happens the ground it shakes the ground and depending on the rate of the earthquake it can cause massive destruction to the area. After the earthquake there is a lot of damage unless the magnitude was not that high it doesn't have as much damage. If the earthquake has a large magnitude it can destroy houses, streets, buildings, etc.
